Using a TTY

A TTY is used to communicate over the telephone with people who are deaf/hoh or have a problem speaking. A TTY ("teletype") or TDD (telecommunication device for the deaf) is a keyboad device with a display. It either plugs into a telephone jack (direct connect) or you place the telephone handset on the couplers. Basic operations:

  • Instead of talking, you type out your conversation.
  • When you finish your statement, you need to let the other person know you are finished by typing. At the end of your statement, type GA. "GA" means "go ahead".
  • To signal the end of the conversation and that you are going to hang up the telephone, type SK. "SK" is short for "stop keying".
